- We watched scenes 13 and 14 on the Popstars DVD.
- Students who are performing in the drama, practice your scenes.
- Others, you need to perform at least 10 scenes from PopStars by next Thursday’s class (January 22nd).
- Remember, the PERFORMANCE is next Thursday, January 22nd, from 16:30 in room 2101.

- We joined Mr. Steckler’s class and continued auditions for the drama performance.
- We need two stage managers, and 4 camera people who can be available at the rehearsals (January 15th lunchtime and 5th period and lunchtime 22nd) and the final performance (January 22nd, 5th period). Please contact either myself or Mr. Steckler if you are interested.

- Today, we looked at photos in the Japanzine magazine, from an exhibition called “The Gaijin Eye” - photos of Japan taken by non-Japanese.
- Three of the photographers featured have flickr accounts:
- Mike Houghton
- Maciek Siemianowsk
- Paul Hillier.
- Why do you think the photographers took these photos? What attracted them about the scene?
- Popstars scene 13 “The Stand-In”. Everyone performed.

Today, we joined Mr Steckler’s class for auditions for the drama performance.
The performance will be held in Room 2111, on Thursday, January 22nd, 2009, 5th period (from 16:30~).
Rehearsals will be held in the same place, Thursday, January 15th, 2009, 5th period and Thursday January 22nd, 2009 at lunchtime (12:20-13:00).
Attendance and participation in the drama performance is, of course, optional. Extra credit will be given to those who take part and who attend.
ドラマの発表会に対して
1. 今期のドラマの発表会は1月22日(木)の5限目に行います。
2. ドラマの発表会に参加するかしないかは自由です。
3. リハーサルは1月15日(木)の5限目と1月22日のお昼休み(12時20分~13時)に行います。
4. 5限目のステクラー先生の授業の学生と発表会に参加する学生以外は出席がもちろん自由です。
5. 発表会に参加する学生は必ずリハーサルに出席してください。(もしどうしても出席できない場合は必ずステクラー先生やシェフナ先生に前もって言ってください。)

- Today, we reviewed and performed all the scenes from 1-12. Most of the students performed all the scenes. All performed scenes were given a score.

- We watched the opening scene of “Far & Away” (in Japanese 『遥かなる大地へ』(up to the death of the father), then the scene on board the ship to America.
- Then we watched Popstars the movie up to and including Scene 12 “Green Card”.
- We reviewed all scenes 1-12.
- Two students performed scene 11.

- I returned last week’s quiz papers.
- We watched again some excerpts from Chaplin’s silent movie The Immigrant (click here for Japanese page) and answered the following questions:
- What is the English title of this movie?
- Who made it?
- What country did he come from?
- Where is the ship going?
- Where has the ship come from?
- Write 3 sentences about the people you see on the ship - what kind of people are they? What did they do before they decided to come to America?
- Was the ticket for the ship expensive or cheap, do you think? Why do you think so?
- How does the girl feel about the loss of the money?
- Why is she so devastated?
- What is 自由の恵み called in English?
- What are the labels the passengers have on their coats, and what is their purpose?
- Performances of scene 12 by those students who did not finish on Tuesday.

- Why does Nobu go to America?
- A: To make it in the music business.
- Why go to America? What’s wrong with the Japanese music business, itself a very large one?
- In last Friday’s Writing class, you wrote about people from your country who have gone to America, and you wrote in particular about their reasons and motives for going to America. What kind of reasons and motives did they have? What did they want?
- To test themselves against the highest level of accomplishment in their field, be it baseball, movie-making, music or whatever.
- To reach out to a larger, wider audience, because the US market or industry is larger than the one in their home country.
- To be more successful or more famous.
- The United States is a unique country in that it is based on an idea, a concept of freedom and the individual. The concept was expressed in the phrase “the sovereign individual”. Many people liked that idea very much. That is why they went to the United States.

- Practice in pairs.
- Performances. From today, I will give you a grade and some comments for the scenes you perform. I will write the grade and the comments on your Progress Sheet. Please keep it and bring it to every class.
